Want to make it as an independent filmmaker? You better be prepared to get in shape.
Making movies is hard enough, but doing it on a shoestring budget makes it even tougher. Without physical fitness, stamina, and strength, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage.
As someone who is an Executive Producer in filmmaking, I know firsthand how physically demanding it can be to lug equipment, set up shots, and keep up with actors.
WHY IT MATTERS…
Being physically fit and having stamina is crucial for independent filmmakers because it can help you work faster, longer, and more efficiently. When you’re on a tight budget, time is money.
THE BIG PICTURE…
Filmmaking is a grueling business, and it’s only getting more competitive. With streaming services like Netflix and Amazon producing original content, the pressure is on to create something fresh, engaging, and visually stunning.
ZOOM OUT…
Take, for example, making a film. During the course of the production, the early stages are led by energy whereas the end becomes an emotional slog. Nearly every project I’ve finished afterward I’m left exhausted mentally, spiritually, and physically— like Jonathan Shields the main character of Vincente Minnelli’s THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL.
ZOOM IN…
In order to keep up with the demands of a shoot, I usually rely on a short but daily workout regime. It’s only about 22 minutes and focuses on building strength using only your body weight. Fast and able to do anywhere.
My Routine (3 Sets):
Squats - 60 Seconds
Lunges - 60 Seconds
Knee Pushups - 60 Seconds
Knee Planks - 60 Seconds
Quad Leg Raises - 60 Seconds
Back Supermans - 60 Seconds
ACTION ITEMS…
👉 Start a regular exercise routine to build strength and stamina.
👉 Invest in film equipment that is lightweight and easy to carry.
👉 Build a mindfulness routine to prepare yourself mentally, before shoots.
